Lake Ponikve – the hidden gem of Krk Island

While Krk Island is famous for its sunny beaches and vibrant coastal towns, its inland hides peaceful corners of untouched nature. One of them is Lake Ponikve, a serene and picturesque area in the very heart of the island – perfect for walking, cycling, birdwatching, or simply relaxing by the water.

Location and background

Located near Lakmartin and Krk Town, Lake Ponikve is an artificial reservoir built in 1986 as part of the island’s water supply system. When full, it covers about 0.75 km², surrounded by gentle hills and Mediterranean vegetation. Despite being man-made, the lake perfectly blends with the natural environment.

Nature and wildlife

Lake Ponikve is part of the Natura 2000 protected network (code HR2000893), known for its biodiversity. The rare dragonfly Lindenia tetraphylla lives here, along with herons, kingfishers, ducks, and many other bird species – making the lake a popular spot for birdwatching and nature photography.

Walking and cycling trails

A circular walking trail of about 4.5 km runs around the lake – easy and suitable for families. Cyclists can follow longer routes that connect the reservoir with Krk Town (about 25 km), offering great views and peaceful surroundings.
